Today marks the second anniversary of Esmé’s aspiration pneumonia and cardiac and respiratory arrest in the ER of a local community hospital.

She was 3 1/2 months old.

There are so many things about that day that changed everything for us. Through our 27 months with Esmé there have been a lot of pivotal moments: test results, new symptoms, milestones (and inchstones). But no moment has been nearly so Earth-shattering. It was truly the moment that I simultaneously understood that our journey would not be typical and accepted that this was ok as long as Esmé was safe.

When I think about that tiny helpless child–who I barely knew–and compare her to the vibrant little human she is now, I understand that this world is full of miracles and miracle workers. As I have said in previous posts, I don’t remember everyone from that day…it is such a blur, but I would like to thank those that I do remember and who made every day that followed possible.

Nurse Peggy
Respiratory therapist Tom
Dr. Jagoda
(Of the ER team)

Nurse Mary
(Of the transfer team and PICU team)

Dr. Horstmann
Dr. Edge
Nurse Sara
Nurse Walter
(Of the PICU team)

Thank you, all of you, and all the rest of you whose names I have missed in the blur of my memory.

And the biggest Thank you goes out to my sister, Kristin, who helped me get Esmé to the hospital. I’m not sure what I would have done without her.
